Sitka, on the outer coast of Baranof Island, enjoys a stunning setting nestled under glacier clad mountains at the western edge of Baranof Island at the threshold of the North Pacific Ocean. The hundreds of small islands that ring the natural harbor coupled with the rich abundance of the productive ocean waters create an ideal place to live. The indigenous Tlingit -Alaska Native people, the Tlingit have lived in harmony with the land here for thousands of years. The Russian America Company made Sitka the administrative center of operations of Russian America. Sitka became Alaska’s first capital under US control. Today Sitka remains a distinctively Alaskan town of about 8,500 hardy and friendly folks profoundly influenced by its long and rich history.
